Answer PaperPaper Code: 124CMMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is dilatant fluid? Give example.

2 marks

Answer

A dilatant fluid is a non-Newtonian fluid whose apparent viscosity increases with an increase in the shear rate (shear-thickening behavior). An example is a concentrated suspension of cornstarch in water.

b

What is the effect of temperature on viscosity?

3 marks

Answer

The effect of temperature on viscosity depends on the state of the fluid. For liquids, viscosity decreases as temperature increases because the cohesive forces between molecules weaken. For gases, viscosity increases as temperature increases due to the rise in molecular kinetic energy and the frequency of intermolecular collisions.

c

Air enters a convergent-divergent nozzle at a temperature of 555.6 K and a pressure of 20 atm. The throat area is one-half that of the discharge of the divergent section. Assuming the Mach number in the throat is 0.8, what are the values of the following quantities at the throat: pressure, temperature, linear velocity, density and mass velocity? For air γ = 1.4 and M = 29.
