1

Explain the drilling waste management and control the effects.

15 marks

Answer

Drilling waste management is the systematic process of collecting, treating, and disposing of waste generated during drilling operations, such as drill cuttings, spent drilling fluids, and produced water. The primary objective is to minimize environmental impact and comply with regulatory standards.

The management process involves the following key stages:

  • Solids Control: Utilizing mechanical equipment like shale shakers, hydrocyclones, and centrifuges to separate drill cuttings from the drilling fluid, allowing the fluid to be recycled into the active system.
  • Waste Minimization: Implementing closed-loop systems that reduce the volume of waste generated by minimizing fluid losses and optimizing mud recovery.
  • Treatment and Processing: Applying technologies such as thermal desorption, bioremediation, or chemical stabilization to reduce the toxicity of cuttings before disposal.
  • Disposal Methods: Employing environmentally safe disposal techniques, including cuttings re-injection (CRI) into suitable geological formations, landfill disposal, or offshore discharge where permitted and treated to meet oil-on-cuttings limits.

To control the environmental effects of drilling waste, the following strategies are implemented:

  • Waste Stream Segregation: Separating hazardous waste from non-hazardous waste at the source to prevent cross-contamination and simplify treatment.
  • Fluid Selection: Using water-based muds (WBM) whenever possible instead of oil-based muds (OBM) to reduce the toxicity and environmental footprint of the waste.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Conducting regular sampling and analysis of waste streams to ensure compliance with local and international environmental regulations.
  • Site Remediation: Ensuring that drill sites are restored to their original condition post-operation by removing contaminated soil and monitoring groundwater quality.

Effective management reduces the risk of soil and water contamination, protects local biodiversity, and mitigates the long-term liability associated with drilling operations.

a

Explain briefly FIT procedural guidelines.

8 marks

Answer

A Formation Integrity Test (FIT) is performed to verify the fracture pressure of the formation immediately below the casing shoe. The procedural guidelines are as follows:

  1. Drill out the cement and shoe track to approximately 5-10 feet into the new formation.
  2. Circulate the hole clean and ensure the mud weight is uniform throughout the system.
  3. Close the blowout preventer (BOP) or use a test plug to isolate the wellbore.
  4. Pump drilling fluid into the wellbore at a slow, constant rate using a high-precision pump or a cement unit.
  5. Monitor the pressure-volume relationship closely. As fluid is pumped, the pressure will increase linearly.
  6. Stop pumping once the target test pressure is reached or if a deviation from the linear pressure increase is observed, indicating the initiation of formation fracture.
  7. Bleed off the pressure and record the data to determine the maximum allowable mud weight (MAMW) for the next drilling interval.
