JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III Year THERMODYNAMICS FOR PETROLEUM ENGINEERS Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R15)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
Differentiate between reversible process and irreversible process with suitable example.
Answer
A reversible process is one that can be reversed without leaving any trace on the surroundings, proceeding through a series of equilibrium states (e.g., frictionless quasi-static expansion). An irreversible process involves dissipative effects like friction or unrestrained expansion, making it impossible to return the system and surroundings to their initial states (e.g., rapid expansion of a gas or heat transfer across a finite temperature difference).
Show that the internal energy is a point function and does not depend on path followed.
Answer
By the First Law of Thermodynamics, for a closed system, dU = dQ - dW. Since work and heat are path functions, their difference (dQ - dW) is independent of the path taken between two states. Because the change in internal energy (dU) depends only on the initial and final states, it is a point function or a property of the system, represented by an exact differential.

A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures of 650oC and 40oC. The engine drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between reservoirs at temperatures of 40oC and 20oC. The heat engine is 2000 kJ and the net work output of the combined engine refrigerator plant is 350 kJ. Evaluate the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the reservoir at 40oC.

Steam enters a steam turbine with a velocity of 16 m/s and specific enthalpy 2990 kJ/kg. The steam leaves the turbine with a velocity of 37 m/s and specific enthalpy of 2530 kJ/kg. The heat lost to the surroundings is 25 kJ/kg with the steam flow rate of 3,60,000 kg/hr. Calculate the turbine work output in kW.

A vessel divided into two parts by a partition, contains 4 mol of N2 gas at 80oC and 35 bar on one side and 3.5 mol of argon gas at 120oC and 24 bar on the other. If the partition is removed and the gases mix adiabatically and completely, what is the change in entropy? Assume Nitrogen and Argon behave as ideal gas with Cv = 5/2 R for N2 and Cv = 3/2 R for argon.
