Construct IPR of a vertical well in a saturated oil reservoir using Vogel’s equation. The following data are given: Reservoir pressure = 4500 psia, Bubble point pressure = 4500 psia, Porosity = 0.2, permeability = 80 md, Fluid formation volume factor = 1.1, Fluid viscosity = 1.8 cp, total compressibility = 0.000013 psi-1, Drainage area = 640 acres, Wellbore radius = 0.328 ft, Skin factor = 2.

Answer

Vogel's equation for a saturated reservoir, where the reservoir pressure equals the bubble point pressure (Pr = Pb), is given by:

q = qmax [1 - 0.2(Pwf/Pr) - 0.8(Pwf/Pr)2]

To construct the IPR, we first calculate the productivity index (J) using the steady-state flow equation for a vertical well:

J = (k h) / [141.2 μ B (ln(re/rw) - 0.75 + S)]

Assuming a reservoir thickness (h) is required, if not provided, it is typically determined from well logs. Using the provided data (k=80 md, μ=1.8 cp, B=1.1, rw=0.328 ft, S=2, and re calculated from 640 acres as 2980 ft):

  1. Calculate the drainage radius: re = √(43560 × 640 / π) ≈ 2980 ft.
  2. Calculate J: J = (80 × h) / [141.2 × 1.8 × 1.1 × (ln(2980/0.328) - 0.75 + 2)].
  3. Calculate the ideal maximum flow rate: qmax = J × Pr / 1.8.
  4. Plot the IPR curve by varying Pwf from 0 to 4500 psia and calculating the corresponding q values using the Vogel equation.

Derive the expression for radial flow for steady state for vertical well. (Make necessary assumptions)

Answer

Assumptions: Steady-state flow, single-phase fluid, homogeneous and isotropic reservoir, constant thickness, and circular drainage area.

Starting from Darcy's Law in radial coordinates:

v = - (k / μ) (dP / dr)

The flow rate q is constant through any cylindrical surface of radius r:

q = v × A = v × (2πrh)

Substituting Darcy's Law:

q = - (k / μ) (dP / dr) (2πrh)

Rearranging and integrating from wellbore (rw, Pwf) to drainage radius (re, Pe):

∫ (dr / r) = - (2πkh / qμ) ∫ dP

Integrating results in:

ln(re/rw) = (2πkh / qμ) (Pe - Pwf)

Solving for q in field units (bbl/day):

q = (0.00708 k h (Pe - Pwf)) / (μ B ln(re/rw))

Natural gas of specific gravity 0.70 and viscosity of 0.0108 cp is passed through 2-inch pipe which has 1.4-inch Nozzle type choke at very high Reynolds number. The upstream pressure and temperature are 110 psia and 70oF, respectively. The downstream pressure is 85 psia, the gas specific heat ratio is 1.20 and the choke flow coefficient is 1.15. Calculate the following: i) Critical pressure ratio, ii) Type of flow based on critical pressure ratio, iii) The expected daily flow rate, iv) Downstream temperature and whether heating is required to prevent icing, v) Expected pressure at nozzle outlet.

Consider a 2 7/8 in. API, 6.40 lb/ft Grade P-105 non-upset tubing anchored with a packer set at 10,000 ft. The crude oil production through the tubing from the bottom of the hole is 1,000 stb/day (no gas or water production). A completion fluid is in place in the annular space between the tubing and the casing (9.8 lb/ gal KCl water). Assuming surface temperature is 60oF and geothermal gradient of 0.01 8oF/ft, determine the landing tension to avoid buckling.

A sandstone with a porosity of 0.18 containing 8 v% calcite is to be acidized with HF/HCl mixture solution. A preflush of 15 wt% HCl solution is to be injected ahead of the mixture to dissolve the carbonate minerals and establish a low-pH environment. If the HCl preflush is to remove all carbonates in a region within 1.5 ft beyond a 0.328-ft-radius wellbore before the HF/HCl stage enters the formation, what minimum preflush volume is required in terms of gallon per foot of pay zone?

A sandstone at a depth of 8,000 ft. has a Poison’s ratio of 0.275 and a poro-elastic constant of 0.70. The average density of the overburden formation is 162 lb/ft3. The pore pressure gradient in the sandstone is 0.36 psi/ft. Assuming a tectonic stress of 1,000 psi and a tensile strength of the sandstone of 800 psi, predict the breakdown pressure for the sandstone.
