a

Discuss the strategies in detail how to achieve sustainable development in a country through green technologies.

7 marks

Answer

Achieving sustainable development through green technologies requires a multi-faceted approach that integrates policy, innovation, and infrastructure. Key strategies include:

  • Transition to Renewable Energy: Replacing fossil-fuel-based power generation with solar, wind, and geothermal energy to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on finite resources.
  • Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Implementing smart grid technologies, energy-efficient building designs, and industrial process optimization to minimize energy waste.
  • Circular Economy Models: Promoting the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to minimize waste generation and ensure that materials remain in the production cycle for as long as possible.
  • Sustainable Transportation: Investing in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, public transit systems, and biofuels to decarbonize the transport sector.
  • Green Policy and Incentives: Governments must provide subsidies for green technology adoption, enforce carbon pricing, and establish strict environmental regulations to encourage corporate responsibility.
  • Research and Development: Funding innovation in carbon capture, storage technologies, and advanced battery storage to overcome intermittency issues in renewable energy.
  • Public Awareness and Education: Encouraging sustainable consumption patterns among citizens to drive market demand for eco-friendly products and services.
b

What are the available different kinds of renewable energy sources? Explain the each of them.

8 marks

Answer

Renewable energy sources are derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. The primary types include:

  • Solar Energy: Captured using photovoltaic cells or solar thermal collectors, this energy converts sunlight directly into electricity or heat. It is abundant, inexhaustible, and increasingly cost-effective.
  • Wind Energy: Harnesses the kinetic energy of air currents using wind turbines. It is suitable for both large-scale utility power plants and small-scale off-grid applications.
  • Hydropower: Utilizes the gravitational force of flowing or falling water to drive turbines. It provides a stable and reliable base-load power supply.
  • Biomass Energy: Derived from organic materials such as agricultural residues, wood, and organic waste. It can be converted into biofuels, biogas, or burned directly for heat and electricity.
  • Geothermal Energy: Taps into the internal heat of the Earth. Steam or hot water from underground reservoirs is used to drive turbines for electricity generation or for direct heating purposes.
  • Ocean/Marine Energy: Includes tidal, wave, and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). These technologies exploit the movement of tides and waves or temperature gradients in the ocean to generate power.

We want to design an anaerobic digester. The cow dung from 15 cows of body weight 180 Kg each is available as feedstock. Assume the temperature is 30°C, the solid content of the cow dung is 15 %, HRT is 45 days. One cow produces 10 Kg of dung daily. Calculate the total volume V of the digester chamber.

A food waste is digested through thermochemical as well as biochemical routes. In the first case the energy requirement is 35 % higher than the 2nd case. Whereas the sugar production per unit mass of food wastes is 20 % more in 1st case than that of 2nd case. Compare the pretreatment energy efficiency for these two routes.
