Answer PaperPaper Code: 821ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3hrs

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

5 x 5 Marks = 25

125 marks
a

Convert the decimal number 5647 to i) BCD ii) Excess-3 code.

5 marks

Answer

i) To convert the decimal number 5647 to BCD, each digit is represented by its 4-bit binary equivalent: 5 is 0101, 6 is 0110, 4 is 0100, and 7 is 0111. Thus, the BCD representation is 0101 0110 0100 0111.

ii) To convert to Excess-3 code, add 3 to each decimal digit and convert the result to a 4-bit binary code: 5+3=8 (1000), 6+3=9 (1001), 4+3=7 (0111), and 7+3=10 (1010). Thus, the Excess-3 representation is 1000 1001 0111 1010.

b

What is locality of reference?

5 marks

Answer

Locality of reference is the tendency of a processor to access the same set of memory locations repetitively over a short period of time. It is categorized into two types: Temporal locality, where a recently accessed memory location is likely to be accessed again soon, and Spatial locality, where memory locations physically close to the recently accessed location are likely to be accessed next. This principle is fundamental to the effective use of cache memory.
