Answer PaperPaper Code: 841ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3hrs

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

What is grey code? What is its importance?

5 marks

Answer

Gray code is a non-weighted binary numbering system where two successive values differ in only one bit position. Its primary importance lies in minimizing errors during transitions between states in digital systems, such as in shaft encoders or Karnaugh maps, because it eliminates the problem of transient states caused by multiple bits changing simultaneously.

b

Briefly discuss memory hierarchy of a system.

5 marks

Answer

The memory hierarchy is a pyramid-like structure organized to balance cost, capacity, and speed. At the top are registers (fastest, smallest, most expensive), followed by Cache (L1, L2, L3), Main Memory (RAM), and finally secondary storage like hard drives or SSDs (slowest, largest, cheapest). The goal is to provide the processor with fast access to frequently used data while maintaining large storage capacity at a lower cost.
