Define Probability. Find the probability of getting 2 diamonds, if we draw 2 cards at random from a pack of 52 cards.

6 marks

Answer

Probability is a numerical measure of the likelihood that a specific event will occur, defined as the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of equally likely possible outcomes in a sample space.

To find the probability of drawing 2 diamonds from a pack of 52 cards:

  1. Total number of ways to draw 2 cards from 52 is 52C2 = (52 × 51) / (2 × 1) = 1326.
  2. Number of diamonds in a pack is 13. The number of ways to draw 2 diamonds from 13 is 13C2 = (13 × 12) / (2 × 1) = 78.
  3. The probability P = 78 / 1326 = 1 / 17.

An integer is chosen at random from the first 200 positive integers. What is the Probability that the integer chosen is divisible by 6 or 8

6 marks

Answer

Let S be the set of the first 200 positive integers, so n(S) = 200. Let A be the set of integers divisible by 6 and B be the set of integers divisible by 8.

  1. The number of integers divisible by 6 is n(A) = floor(200 / 6) = 33.
  2. The number of integers divisible by 8 is n(B) = floor(200 / 8) = 25.
  3. The intersection A ∩ B consists of integers divisible by the least common multiple of 6 and 8, which is 24. Thus, n(A ∩ B) = floor(200 / 24) = 8.
  4. Using the addition theorem of probability, n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A ∩ B) = 33 + 25 - 8 = 50.
  5. The required probability is P(A ∪ B) = n(A ∪ B) / n(S) = 50 / 200 = 1 / 4 or 0.25.
