Answer PaperPaper Code: 841ADMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3hrs

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

5 × 5 Marks = 25

a

If A and B are mutually exclusive events such that P(A) = 4 P(B) and A ∪ B = S. Find: i) P(A ∩ BC) ii) P(A ∩ B)

5 marks

Answer

Given that A and B are mutually exclusive, P(A ∩ B) = 0. Since A ∪ B = S, P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) = 1. Given P(A) = 4P(B), we have 4P(B) + P(B) = 1, which implies 5P(B) = 1, so P(B) = 0.2 and P(A) = 0.8.

i) P(A ∩ BC) = P(A) - P(A ∩ B) = 0.8 - 0 = 0.8.

ii) P(A ∩ B) = 0 (since they are mutually exclusive).

b

If X is a continuous random variable and Y= aX + b, then prove that i) E(Y) = a E(X) + b ii) V(Y) = a2V(X)

5 marks

Answer

i) E(Y) = E(aX + b). By the linearity property of expectation, E(aX + b) = aE(X) + E(b). Since b is a constant, E(b) = b. Thus, E(Y) = aE(X) + b.

ii) V(Y) = V(aX + b). By the properties of variance, V(aX + b) = a2V(X) + V(b). Since the variance of a constant is zero, V(b) = 0. Thus, V(Y) = a2V(X).

c

A sample of size 81 was taken whose variance is 20.25 and mean 32. Construct 95% confidence interval for the mean.
