Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 20 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 8 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

a

A class of 12 boys and 8 girls three students are selected at random one after the other. Find the probability that i) first two are boys and third is girl ii) first and third are of the same sex and the second is of opposite sex.

4 marks

Answer

Total students = 20 (12 boys, 8 girls). The selections are made without replacement.

  1. Probability of (Boy, Boy, Girl) = (12/20) × (11/19) × (8/18) = 1056 / 6840 = 44/285 ≈ 0.1544.
  2. Probability of (Boy, Girl, Boy) or (Girl, Boy, Girl) = [(12/20) × (8/19) × (11/18)] + [(8/20) × (12/19) × (7/18)] = (1056 / 6840) + (672 / 6840) = 1728 / 6840 = 24/95 ≈ 0.2526.
b

In the month of September, on an average, rain falls on 10 days. Find the probability: i) that the rain fall on just two days of a given work, ii) that in three days of a given week, it rains and the remaining four days it won‟t rain.

4 marks

Answer

The probability of rain on any given day is p = 10/30 = 1/3. The probability of no rain is q = 2/3. Using the binomial distribution B(n, p) with n = 7 days:

  1. Probability of rain on exactly two days: P(X=2) = 7C2 × (1/3)^2 × (2/3)^5 = 21 × (1/9) × (32/243) = 672 / 2187 ≈ 0.3073.
  2. Probability of rain on exactly three days: P(X=3) = 7C3 × (1/3)^3 × (2/3)^4 = 35 × (1/27) × (16/81) = 560 / 2187 ≈ 0.2561.
c

A Professor‟s feeling about the mean mark is the final examination in “probability” of a large group of students is expressed subjectively by normal distribution with μ0 = 67.2 and σ0 = 1.5. a) If the mean mark lies in the interval (65.0, 70.0) determine the prior probability the professor should assign to the mean mark. b) Find the posterior mean μ1 and posterior s.d. σ1 if the examination is conducted on a random sample of 40 students yielding mean 74.9 and s.d. 7.4. Use s = 7.4 as an estimate of σ. c) Determine the posterior probability which he will thus assign to the mean mark being in the interval (65, 70), using results obtained is (b) and (c) construct a 95% Bayesian interval for μ.
