Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad MCA III OPERATING SYSTEMS Previous Question Paper (January – 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
What are the different types of System Calls.
Answer
System calls provide an interface between a process and the operating system. They are generally categorized into five types:
- Process Control: Manage process creation, termination, execution, and attributes (e.g., fork, exit, wait).
- File Management: Handle file operations such as create, delete, open, close, read, and write.
- Device Management: Request and release devices, read/write device status, and attach/detach devices.
- Information Maintenance: Transfer information between the user program and the OS, such as getting time, date, or system data.
- Communications: Facilitate inter-process communication (IPC) through message passing or shared memory mechanisms.
Discuss about the activities that happen during context switching?
Answer
Context switching is the process of storing the state of a running process and restoring the state of another process to allow the CPU to switch tasks. The activities include:
- Saving the current process's state (CPU registers, program counter, and stack pointer) into its Process Control Block (PCB).
- Updating the PCB of the current process to reflect its new state (e.g., from Running to Ready or Waiting).
- Moving the PCB to the appropriate queue (Ready or Waiting).
- Selecting the next process to execute using the CPU scheduler.
- Loading the saved state (registers, program counter) from the selected process's PCB into the CPU hardware.

Suppose the head of a moving head disk with 200 tracks, numbered 0 to 199, is currently serving a request at track 123 and has just finished a request at track 125.If the queue of Requests is kept in FIFO order: 126, 17, 91, 107, 194, 150, 102, 105, 130, 12. What is the total head movement to satisfy these requests for the following disk scheduling algorithms? (a) FCFS b) SSTF c) SCAN
