a

Explain the conceptual model of the Unified Modeling Language.

5 marks

Answer

The conceptual model of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) is built upon three main pillars: building blocks, rules, and common mechanisms. The building blocks consist of things (structural, behavioral, grouping, and annotational), relationships (dependency, association, generalization, and realization), and diagrams. The rules define how these blocks are combined to form well-formed models, covering aspects like visibility, scope, and integrity. The common mechanisms provide a consistent way to apply the language, including specifications, adornments, common divisions (like class vs. object), and extensibility mechanisms such as stereotypes, tagged values, and constraints.

b

Compare and contrast is-a relationship with has-a relationship with suitable examples.

5 marks

Answer

An is-a relationship represents inheritance, where a subclass is a specialized version of a superclass. It implies that the subclass inherits all properties and behaviors of the parent. For example, a 'Car' is-a 'Vehicle'.

A has-a relationship represents composition or aggregation, where one class contains another as a part of its structure. It indicates ownership or association rather than identity. For example, a 'Car' has-a 'Engine'.

The key contrast is that 'is-a' defines an identity relationship (generalization), whereas 'has-a' defines a structural relationship (part-whole).
