5 marks

Answer

Cybercriminals are individuals or groups who use computer technology and networks to commit illegal acts. They are defined as cybercriminals when they engage in activities that target information systems, data, or digital infrastructure with malicious intent. The primary cases that define an individual as a cybercriminal include:

  • Unauthorized Access and Hacking: Intentionally gaining access to computer systems, networks, or databases without authorization to steal, alter, or destroy data.
  • Cyber-enabled Fraud and Financial Crimes: Using digital platforms to conduct fraudulent activities, such as phishing, identity theft, or credit card fraud, to gain unauthorized financial benefits.
  • Distribution of Malicious Software: Creating, deploying, or spreading malware, such as viruses, ransomware, or spyware, designed to damage systems or extort money from victims.
  • Cyber-stalking and Harassment: Using electronic communication to threaten, intimidate, or harass individuals, which constitutes a criminal offense under various cyber laws.
  • Intellectual Property Theft: Engaging in the illegal acquisition, reproduction, or distribution of copyrighted digital content, software, or proprietary trade secrets for personal or commercial gain.

Explain the steps for Registry Settings for Mobile Devices.

5 marks

Answer

Registry settings for mobile devices, particularly in Windows-based mobile environments, are managed to enforce security policies, restrict user access, and configure device behavior. The following steps outline the process for modifying and deploying these settings:

  1. Identification of Registry Keys: Determine the specific HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) or HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU) keys that control the desired security feature, such as password complexity, screen lock timeouts, or camera access.
  2. Configuration via Mobile Device Management (MDM): Use an MDM solution to create a configuration profile. Most modern enterprise environments do not allow manual registry editing; instead, they use OMA-DM (Open Mobile Alliance Device Management) protocols to push settings that map to the underlying registry values.
  3. Creation of Provisioning Packages: For Windows devices, use the Windows Configuration Designer to create a provisioning package (.ppkg file). This file contains the registry modifications that will be applied to the device during or after the initial setup.
  4. Testing in a Sandbox Environment: Before mass deployment, apply the registry changes to a test device to ensure that the modifications do not cause system instability or conflicts with existing security applications.
  5. Deployment and Enforcement: Distribute the configuration profile or provisioning package to the target devices via the enterprise management console. Once received, the device OS processes these instructions, updates the registry hives, and enforces the new security posture.
