Answer PaperPaper Code: 241ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Write and explain the Henderson equation.

2 marks

Answer

The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation is: pH = pKa + log([Salt]/[Acid]). It relates the pH of a buffer solution to the pKa of the weak acid and the ratio of the concentrations of the conjugate base (salt) and the weak acid.

b

What is the solubility product of silver chloride if its solubility at 25°C is 1.86×10-4?

3 marks

Answer

For silver chloride (AgCl), the dissociation is AgCl ⇌ Ag+ + Cl-. Given solubility (s) = 1.86 × 10^-4 M. The solubility product (Ksp) is calculated as: Ksp = [Ag+][Cl-] = s × s = s^2. Ksp = (1.86 × 10^-4)^2 = 3.46 × 10^-8.

c
