a

Define the terms Pharmacopoeia and Monographs of pharmacopoeia.

2 marks

Answer

A Pharmacopoeia is an official publication issued by a government authority that contains a list of medicinal drugs, chemicals, and pharmaceutical preparations along with their standards of purity, quality, and methods of testing. A Monograph is a detailed document within the pharmacopoeia that provides specific information for a single substance, including its chemical structure, identification tests, purity requirements, assay methods, and storage conditions.

b

Write the modifications of limit test for sulphates.

3 marks

Answer

The limit test for sulphates is modified by adding a small amount of alcohol to the reaction mixture to prevent supersaturation and ensure the uniform precipitation of barium sulphate. Additionally, a specific quantity of barium chloride reagent is added to the test solution in the presence of dilute hydrochloric acid to ensure that the precipitation is strictly due to the presence of sulphate ions, thereby improving the sensitivity and clarity of the turbidity comparison.
