Write short notes on USP and Extra Pharmacopoeia.

7 marks

Answer

United States Pharmacopoeia (USP): The USP is an official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured or sold in the United States. It provides legally recognized standards for identity, strength, quality, and purity of these substances. It is published annually and is essential for ensuring the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products in the US market.

Extra Pharmacopoeia (Martindale): The Extra Pharmacopoeia, commonly known as Martindale, is an internationally recognized reference work that provides comprehensive, unbiased, and evaluated information on drugs and medicines used throughout the world. Unlike official pharmacopoeias, it is not a legal standard but a clinical reference. It covers details on properties, actions, uses, dosage, and adverse effects of drugs, making it an invaluable resource for pharmacists and medical practitioners for clinical decision-making.
