Answer PaperPaper Code: 243AAMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Write the structure and use of DDT?

2 marks

Answer

DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) consists of two chlorophenyl groups attached to a central carbon atom, which is also bonded to a trichloromethyl group. Its structure is 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane.

Cl-C6H4-CH(CCl3)-C6H4-Cl

It is primarily used as a potent insecticide to control diseases like malaria and typhus by targeting mosquitoes and lice, though its use is now heavily restricted or banned in many countries due to environmental persistence and toxicity.

1b

Define electrophiles? Give two examples for electrophiles.

3 marks

Answer

Electrophiles are electron-deficient chemical species that possess an empty orbital or a partial positive charge, allowing them to accept an electron pair from a nucleophile to form a new chemical bond. They are often referred to as Lewis acids.

Examples of electrophiles include:

  • Nitronium ion (NO₂⁺): A positively charged species that acts as a strong electrophile in aromatic substitution reactions.
  • Boron trifluoride (BF₃): A neutral molecule with an incomplete octet on the boron atom, allowing it to accept a lone pair of electrons.
