If F = grad(x3+y3+z3-3xyz), find div F.

7 marks

Answer

Given the scalar field φ = x3 + y3 + z3 - 3xyz, the vector field F is defined as ∇φ. We need to find the divergence of F, which is div F = ∇ · (∇φ) = ∇2φ, the Laplacian of φ.

First, calculate the partial derivatives of φ:

∂φ/∂x = 3x2 - 3yz
∂φ/∂y = 3y2 - 3xz
∂φ/∂z = 3z2 - 3xy

Now, calculate the second-order partial derivatives:

∂2φ/∂x2 = 6x
∂2φ/∂y2 = 6y
∂2φ/∂z2 = 6z

The divergence is the sum of these second partial derivatives:

div F = 6x + 6y + 6z = 6(x + y + z)

Evaluate the surface integral of F.n ds where F = xzi + yzj + z2k and S is the upper half of the sphere x2 + y2 + z2 = 1.

Answer

To evaluate the surface integral ∬S F · n dS where F = xzi + yzj + z2k and S is the upper hemisphere x2 + y2 + z2 = 1 (z ≥ 0), we use the Divergence Theorem. Since S is not a closed surface, we close it with the base disk S1 in the xy-plane (z = 0, x2 + y2 ≤ 1).

By the Divergence Theorem, ∬S+S1 F · n dS = ∭V (∇ · F) dV.

Calculate ∇ · F:

∇ · F = ∂(xz)/∂x + ∂(yz)/∂y + ∂(z2)/∂z = z + z + 2z = 4z

Using spherical coordinates (x = ρ sinθ cosφ, y = ρ sinθ sinφ, z = ρ cosθ), the volume integral is:

∭V 4z dV = ∫02π ∫0π/2 ∫01 (4ρ cosθ) ρ2 sinθ dρ dθ dφ
= 4 ∫02π dφ ∫0π/2 sinθ cosθ dθ ∫01 ρ3 dρ = 4(2π) [sin2θ/2]0π/2 [ρ4/4]01 = 8π(1/2)(1/4) = π

Now calculate the flux through the base S1. On S1, z = 0 and the outward normal n = -k. Thus, F · n = (xzi + yzj + z2k) · (-k) = -z2 = 0. Therefore, ∬S1 F · n dS = 0.

Since ∬S F · n dS + ∬S1 F · n dS = π, we have ∬S F · n dS = π - 0 = π.
