Why is the shear modulus always smaller than the elastic modulus?

3 marks

Answer

The relationship between the elastic modulus (E), shear modulus (G), and Poisson's ratio (ν) is given by the formula E = 2G(1 + ν). Since Poisson's ratio for most isotropic materials ranges between 0 and 0.5, the term 2(1 + ν) is always greater than 1. Consequently, E is always greater than G, meaning the shear modulus is inherently smaller than the elastic modulus.

A 3 m steel rod of diameter 25 mm is placed inside a brass tube of the same length and inside and outside diameters of 25 mm and 35 mm respectively. What is the deformation of the rod and the tube when a force of 50 kN is applied on them through a rigid plate? Take Young’s modulus steel and brass are 200 GPa and 100 GPa respectively.

12 marks

Answer

To find the deformation, we first calculate the cross-sectional areas of the steel rod (As) and the brass tube (Ab):

As = (π / 4) × (25 mm)2 = 490.87 mm2
Ab = (π / 4) × (352 - 252) mm2 = 471.24 mm2

Since the components are compressed by a rigid plate, they undergo the same deformation (δ). The total force (P) is the sum of the forces carried by each component:

P = Ps + Pb = (EsAsδ / L) + (EbAbδ / L)

Substituting the given values (P = 50,000 N, Es = 200,000 N/mm2, Eb = 100,000 N/mm2, L = 3000 mm):

50,000 = (δ / 3000) × [(200,000 × 490.87) + (100,000 × 471.24)]
50,000 = (δ / 3000) × [98,174,000 + 47,124,000]
50,000 = δ × 48,432.67
δ = 1.032 mm

The deformation of both the steel rod and the brass tube is 1.032 mm.
