Answer PaperPaper Code: 124BFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Draw the Mohr’s Circle to determine stains on inclined plane

2 marks

Answer

Mohr's circle for strain is constructed on a coordinate system with normal strain (ε) on the horizontal axis and half-shear strain (γ/2) on the vertical axis. The circle is drawn by plotting points (εx, γxy/2) and (εy, -γxy/2) and connecting them. The intersection of the circle with the horizontal axis represents the principal strains, while the coordinates of any point on the circle represent the normal and shear strains on an inclined plane at a specific orientation.

b

Discuss the equations for plane stress and plane strain for 2D elastic body.

3 marks

Answer

For a 2D elastic body, plane stress assumes stress components in the z-direction (σz, τxz, τyz) are zero, while plane strain assumes strain components in the z-direction (εz, γxz, γyz) are zero. The constitutive relations are modified accordingly: for plane stress, εz = -(ν/E)(σx + σy), and for plane strain, σz = ν(σx + σy), where ν is Poisson's ratio and E is Young's modulus.

a

The direct tensile and compressive stress is 60N/mm2 and 40N/mm2 respectively are applied on planes at right angles to each other. If the maximum principal stress is limited to 75N/mm2 (tensile), determine the shear stress that may be allowed on the planes. Also determine the minimum principal stress and the maximum shear stresses.

At a certain point in a strained material the intensities of normal stresses on two planes at right angles to each other are 20N/mm2 and 10N/mm2 both tensile. They are accompanied by shear stress of 10N/mm2. Calculate the principal planes and the principal stresses. Find also the maximum shear stress.
