Answer PaperPaper Code: 114BFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define body forces and make a note of their relation with hydrostatic Pressure.

2 marks

Answer

Body forces are forces that act throughout the volume of a body, such as gravity, magnetic, or inertial forces. They are proportional to the mass or volume of the element. In the context of hydrostatic pressure, body forces are balanced by the pressure gradient, expressed as the equilibrium condition:

∇p = ρf
where p is pressure, ρ is density, and f represents the body force vector per unit mass.

b

Define bulk modulus or modulus of volume expansion.

3 marks

Answer

The bulk modulus (K) is a measure of a substance's resistance to uniform compression. It is defined as the ratio of the infinitesimal pressure increase to the resulting relative decrease of the volume. Mathematically:

K = -V(dp/dV)
where V is the initial volume and dp/dV is the rate of change of pressure with respect to volume.

At a particular point in a structural member a two-dimensional stress system exists where σx = 60 N/mm, σy = -40 N/mm and τxy = 50 N/mm2. If Young’s modulus E = 200000 N/mm2 and Poisson's ratio ν = 0.3. Calculate the direct strain in the x and y directions and the shear strain at the point. Also calculate the principal strains at the point and their inclination to the plane on which σx acts. Verify your answer using a graphical method.
