Answer PaperPaper Code: 111ADMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

1.a

Define Ionic bond.

2 marks

Answer

An ionic bond is a type of chemical bond formed through the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions. It typically occurs when one or more electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a non-metal atom, resulting in the formation of a positively charged cation and a negatively charged anion.

1.b

Explain Burger’s vector.

3 marks

Answer

A Burgers vector is a fundamental vector used in crystallography to define the magnitude and direction of the lattice distortion caused by a dislocation. It represents the closure failure of a Burgers circuit, which is a closed loop drawn around the dislocation line in a perfect crystal lattice.

To determine the Burgers vector, one performs the following steps:

  1. Construct a circuit of equal number of atomic steps in all directions around the dislocation in the real crystal.
  2. Repeat the exact same sequence of steps in a perfect, defect-free crystal.
  3. The additional vector required to close the loop in the perfect crystal is the Burgers vector, denoted by b.

The orientation of the Burgers vector relative to the dislocation line determines the nature of the defect: it is perpendicular for an edge dislocation and parallel for a screw dislocation.
