RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
B.Tech, EEE, III-I, R16, Nov-2023 Exam, Max Marks: 25, Time: 3 Hours
Instructions: Answer all questions.
Examples of renewable energy sources include:
- Solar Energy: Energy derived from the sun's radiation.
- Wind Energy: Energy harnessed from the kinetic energy of moving air.
- Hydropower: Energy generated from the movement of water, typically through dams.
- Geothermal Energy: Heat energy from within the Earth's crust.
- Biomass Energy: Energy obtained from organic matter such as plants and animal waste.
- Ocean Energy: Energy from tides, waves, and ocean thermal gradients.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
B.Tech, EEE, III-I, R16, Nov-2023 Exam, Max Marks: 25, Time: 3 Hours
Instructions: Answer all questions.
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. These gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone (O3). The absorbed energy warms the lower atmosphere and the Earth's surface. Without this natural greenhouse effect, the Earth would be too cold to support life.
Illustration of the Greenhouse Effect:
- Solar Radiation In: The Sun emits radiation that travels through space and reaches the Earth's atmosphere. Most of this radiation is short-wave and passes through the atmosphere.
- Absorption by Earth: A portion of the incoming solar radiation is absorbed by the Earth's surface, warming it.
- Infrared Radiation Out: The warmed Earth's surface then radiates heat back towards space in the form of long-wave infrared radiation.
- Trapping by Greenhouse Gases: Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb a significant portion of this outgoing infrared radiation.
- Re-radiation: These gases then re-radiate the absorbed energy in all directions, including back towards the Earth's surface.
- Warming Effect: This re-radiated energy further warms the atmosphere and the Earth's surface, maintaining a habitable temperature.
An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases due to human activities (like burning fossil fuels) leads to an enhanced greenhouse effect, causing global warming and climate change.
