Answer PaperPaper Code: 133AVMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Answer any five questions. Part A is compulsory. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Explain the terms intensity of pressure and pressure head.

2 marks

Answer

Intensity of pressure is defined as the force exerted by a fluid per unit area of the surface on which it acts. Pressure head represents the height of a fluid column of a specific density that would exert a given pressure at its base, calculated as p/ρg.

b

Differentiate between simple and differential types of manometers.

3 marks

Answer

A simple manometer measures the pressure at a single point in a fluid pipe or container relative to atmospheric pressure. A differential manometer is used to measure the difference in pressure between two distinct points in a pipe or between two different pipes.

c

What is meant by one-dimensional, two dimensional and three dimensional flows?

Through a very narrow gap of height h, a thin plate of large extent is pulled at a velocity V. On one side of the plate is oil of viscosity μ1 and on the other side oil of viscosity μ2. Calculate the position of the plate so that (a) the shear force on the two sides of the plate is equal; (b) the pull required to drag the plate is minimum.
