Part A

Explain Rapidly varied flow and gradually varied flow.
Answer
Rapidly Varied Flow (RVF) is a flow where the depth of water changes abruptly over a very short distance, such as in a hydraulic jump. Gradually Varied Flow (GVF) is a steady non-uniform flow where the depth of water changes gradually along the length of the channel, such as backwater curves.
What is specific energy curve?
Answer
A specific energy curve is a graphical representation showing the relationship between the specific energy (E) and the depth of flow (y) for a given discharge in an open channel. It typically shows two depths (alternate depths) for a given specific energy value, except at the critical depth where the energy is minimum.

A pipe of diameter 1.5 m is required to transport an oil of specific gravity 0.90 and viscosity 3×10-2 poise at the rate of 3000 litres/s. Tests were conducted on a 15 cm diameter pipe using water at 200C. Find the velocity and rate of flow in the model. Viscosity of water at 200C = 0.01 poise.

A jet of water of diameter 7.5 cm strikes a curved plate at its centre with a velocity of 20 m/s. The curved plate is moving with a velocity of 8 m/s in the direction of the jet. The jet is deflected through an angle of 1650. Assuming the plate smooth find: i) Force exerted on the plate in the direction of jet. ii) Power of the jet. iii) Efficiency of the jet.
