JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B. Tech II STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS - I Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2023 - R13)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
State the difference between a deficient frame and redundant frame.
Answer
A deficient frame is one where the number of members is less than the number required for a perfect frame (m < 2j - 3), making it unstable. A redundant frame has more members than required for a perfect frame (m > 2j - 3), making it statically indeterminate.
What are the assumptions made in the analysis of a simple truss?
Answer
- The truss members are connected by frictionless pin joints.
- The loads are applied only at the joints.
- The self-weight of the members is neglected or considered to act at the joints.
- The members are perfectly straight and their axes are concurrent at the joints.

A three hinged parabolic arch hinged at the supports and at the crown has a span of 24m and a central rise of 4m. It carries a concentrated load of 50 kN at 18m from left support and uniformly distributed load of 30 kN/m over the left half portion. Determine the moment, thrust and radial shear at a section 6m from the left support.
