JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I Previous Question Paper (December - 2017 - R13)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
What is the total degree of static indeterminacy of the truss shown in Figure 1.
Answer
The total degree of static indeterminacy (Ds) for a plane truss is calculated using the formula Ds = m + r - 2j, where m is the number of members, r is the number of external support reactions, and j is the number of joints. For a stable, determinate truss, Ds = 0. If m + r > 2j, the truss is statically indeterminate to the degree of (m + r - 2j).
State Castigliano’s First Theorem.
Answer
Castigliano’s First Theorem states that for a linearly elastic structure, the partial derivative of the total strain energy (U) with respect to any particular displacement component (Δi) at a point is equal to the external force (Pi) acting at that point in the direction of the displacement.
This theorem is applicable to structures where the material obeys Hooke's law, the temperature remains constant, and the supports are unyielding.
A three hinged parabolic arch hinged at the crown and springing has a horizontal span of 12 m and a central rise of 2.5 m. It carries a udl of 30 kN/m run over the left hand half of the span. Calculate the reactions at the end hinges.
