a

A close coiled helical spring of mean diameter 140mm is made of 12mm diameter wire. Find the direct axial load the spring can carry, if the maximum stress is not to exceed 100N/mm2.

2 marks

Answer

Given: Mean diameter (D) = 140 mm, wire diameter (d) = 12 mm, maximum shear stress (τ) = 100 N/mm2. The formula for shear stress in a close-coiled helical spring is τ = (8WD) / (πd3). Substituting the values: 100 = (8 × W × 140) / (π × 123). Solving for W: W = (100 × π × 1728) / 1120 = 484.72 N.

b

What are assumptions made in the derivation of shear stress produced in a circular shaft subjected to torsion?

3 marks

Answer

The assumptions are: 1. The material of the shaft is uniform, homogeneous, and isotropic. 2. The shaft is circular and of uniform cross-section. 3. Plane sections remain plane after twisting. 4. Twist is uniform along the length of the shaft. 5. The shaft is subjected to pure torsion.
