B.Tech | II Year | I Semester | R15 | February - 2024

Answer PaperPaper Code: 123BRMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

1.a

State the Superposition theorem.

2 marks

Answer

The Superposition theorem states that in any linear, bilateral network containing two or more independent sources, the response (voltage or current) in any branch is equal to the algebraic sum of the individual responses caused by each independent source acting alone, while all other independent sources are replaced by their internal resistances.

To apply this theorem, voltage sources are replaced by a short circuit (zero internal resistance) and current sources are replaced by an open circuit (infinite internal resistance).

1.b

State and explain Kirchhoff’s laws.

3 marks

Answer

Kirchhoff's laws are fundamental principles used to analyze electrical circuits:

1. Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL): Also known as the junction rule, it states that the algebraic sum of currents meeting at any node (or junction) in an electrical circuit is zero. Mathematically, it is expressed as:

Σ I = 0

This law is based on the principle of conservation of charge, implying that the total current entering a node must equal the total current leaving it.

2. Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL): Also known as the loop rule, it states that the algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is zero. Mathematically, it is expressed as:

Σ V = 0

This law is based on the principle of conservation of energy, meaning the sum of potential rises equals the sum of potential drops across components within a closed path.
