JNTU B.Tech II COMPUTER ORGANIZATION Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R13)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
List the data transfer and data manipulation instructions available in a computer.
Answer
Data transfer instructions are responsible for moving data between memory and processor registers, or between different registers. Common examples include Load, Store, Move, Exchange, Input, and Output.
Data manipulation instructions perform arithmetic, logical, and shift operations on data. These include Arithmetic instructions (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Increment, Decrement), Logical and bit manipulation instructions (AND, OR, XOR, NOT, Clear, Set), and Shift instructions (Logical shift, Arithmetic shift, Rotate).
What is an interrupt? What are the uses of interrupts?
Answer
An interrupt is a signal sent by hardware or software to the processor, indicating an event that needs immediate attention. When an interrupt occurs, the processor suspends its current execution, saves its state, and transfers control to a specific routine known as an Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) to handle the request.
The primary uses of interrupts include:
- I/O Data Transfer: Allowing peripheral devices to notify the CPU when they are ready for data transfer, eliminating the need for inefficient polling.
- Error Handling: Enabling the system to respond immediately to hardware failures or illegal operations, such as division by zero.
- Real-time Processing: Facilitating time-critical tasks by allowing external events to preempt normal program execution.
- System Calls: Providing a mechanism for user programs to request services from the operating system kernel.
