Part A

1.a

What is the need of overflow flag?

2 marks

Answer

The overflow flag is essential in computer arithmetic to indicate that the result of a signed arithmetic operation (such as addition or subtraction) has exceeded the representable range of the destination register. It detects when the sign bit of the result is incorrect due to a carry into the sign bit position that is not accompanied by a carry out of the sign bit, signaling that the computed value is numerically invalid for the given bit-width.

1.b

What is the purpose of memory?

3 marks

Answer

The primary purpose of memory in a computer system is to provide a storage space for data and instructions that the Central Processing Unit (CPU) requires to perform tasks. It acts as a bridge between the processor and secondary storage devices, ensuring that the CPU has rapid access to the information it needs for execution.

Memory serves three main functions: storage of the operating system and system software, storage of application programs currently in use, and storage of data being processed or waiting to be processed. By maintaining this information in a volatile, high-speed medium, memory allows the computer to execute complex sequences of operations efficiently without the latency associated with retrieving data from slower secondary storage.
