Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What is the bandwidth required for an amplitude modulated signal?

2 marks

Answer

The bandwidth required for an amplitude modulated (AM) signal is twice the frequency of the modulating message signal. If the message signal has a maximum frequency component of fm, the bandwidth is given by:

BW = 2fm
1.b

A carrier signal

c(t)= 20cos (2π 10^6t)
is modulated by a message signal
m(t)= 5 cos (2π 10^4t)
to generate a DSBSC signal. Calculate bandwidth and power?

3 marks

Answer

Given the carrier signal c(t) = 20 cos(2π 10^6 t) and the message signal m(t) = 5 cos(2π 10^4 t), the message frequency is f_m = 10^4 Hz = 10 kHz. For a DSBSC signal, the bandwidth is defined as 2f_m.

BW = 2 × 10 kHz = 20 kHz

The DSBSC signal is represented as s(t) = A_c cos(2π f_c t) × A_m cos(2π f_m t). The power of a DSBSC signal is given by the formula:

P = (A_c^2 × A_m^2) / 8

Substituting the given amplitudes A_c = 20 and A_m = 5:

P = (20^2 × 5^2) / 8 = (400 × 25) / 8 = 10000 / 8 = 1250 W
