Answer PaperPaper Code: 115AKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

PART - A

125 marks
a

What are the advantages of FM over AM?

2 marks

Answer

The primary advantages of FM over AM are significantly better noise immunity and higher efficiency. Since information is encoded in frequency variations rather than amplitude, FM is less susceptible to amplitude-based interference and fading.

b

Write the equations for FM and PM signals and show the difference.

3 marks

Answer

The FM signal is defined as:

s(t) = A cos(ωct + 2πkf ∫ m(τ)dτ)

The PM signal is defined as:

s(t) = A cos(ωct + kp m(t))

The difference is that in FM, the instantaneous frequency deviation is proportional to the message signal m(t), whereas in PM, the instantaneous phase deviation is proportional to the message signal m(t).

c

Why pre-emphasis and de-emphasis are required in FM system.
