PART - A

125 marks
a

Give the basic principle behind the coherent detection of DSB-SC modulated waves.

2 marks

Answer

The basic principle of coherent detection is the multiplication of the incoming DSB-SC signal with a locally generated carrier that is perfectly synchronized in both frequency and phase with the original carrier used at the transmitter, followed by low-pass filtering to recover the original message signal.

b

Explain the concept of Double Sideband Suppressed Carrier (DSB-SC) modulation in time domain.

3 marks

Answer

In the time domain, DSB-SC modulation is represented as the product of the message signal m(t) and the carrier signal c(t) = A cos(2πfct). Mathematically, the modulated signal is s(t) = m(t)A cos(2πfct). This process suppresses the carrier component, leaving only the upper and lower sidebands, which results in higher power efficiency compared to conventional AM.
