a

Derive the Poisson’s and Laplace equations.

8 marks

Answer

Starting from Gauss's Law in differential form, the divergence of the electric flux density is equal to the volume charge density:

∇ · D = ρv

Substituting the constitutive relation D = εE and the definition of the electric field as the negative gradient of the scalar potential, E = -∇V, we obtain:

∇ · (-ε∇V) = ρv

Assuming a homogeneous medium where ε is constant, this simplifies to Poisson's equation:

∇2V = -ρv / ε

In a charge-free region where ρv = 0, the equation reduces to Laplace's equation:

∇2V = 0

For a line charge, ρL = (10-12/2) C/m on the z-axis, find VAB, where A is (4m, π/4, 0) and B is (8m, π, 10m).

4 marks

Answer

The potential difference between two points A and B in the field of a line charge is given by:

VAB = VA - VB = (ρL / 2πε) ln(rB / rA)

Given ρL = 0.5 × 10-12 C/m, ε = ε0 ≈ 8.854 × 10-12 F/m, rA = 4 m, and rB = 8 m:

VAB = (0.5 × 10-12 / (2π × 8.854 × 10-12)) ln(8 / 4)
VAB = (0.5 / (2π × 8.854)) × ln(2) ≈ 0.00898 × 0.693 ≈ 0.00622 V
