JNTU B.Tech III ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY AND TRANSMISSION LINES Previous Question Paper (July/August - 2023 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
PART – A
Calculate the capacitance of the Earth assuming it is a conducting sphere of radius R0 = 6,400 km.
Answer
The capacitance C of an isolated conducting sphere of radius R is given by C = 4πε₀R. Given R₀ = 6.4 × 10⁶ m and ε₀ ≈ 8.854 × 10⁻¹² F/m, the calculation is C = 4 × π × 8.854 × 10⁻¹² × 6.4 × 10⁶ ≈ 711 μF.
Can there also be combinations of charge distributions? Give examples.
Answer
Yes, charge distributions can be combined using the principle of superposition. Examples include a system consisting of a point charge placed near a charged infinite line, or a spherical charge distribution superimposed with a uniform volume charge density. In such cases, the total electric field is the vector sum of the fields produced by each individual distribution.

A long power transmission line supplies 1500 MW at 750 kV to a matched load (that is, the load impedance equals the line impedance). (i) Suppose the load is disconnected. What is the reflection coefficient at the load? (ii) Because of a fault on the line, the load changes from the matched condition to ZL = 200 + j100 ohms. What is the reflection coefficient at the load now?
