a

Express the following numbers in decimal: i) (10110.0101)2 ii) (26.24)8 iii) (DADA.B)16

6 marks

Answer

i) (10110.0101)2 = (1×24) + (0×23) + (1×22) + (1×21) + (0×20) + (0×2-1) + (1×2-2) + (0×2-3) + (1×2-4) = 16 + 0 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0.25 + 0 + 0.0625 = 22.312510

ii) (26.24)8 = (2×81) + (6×80) + (2×8-1) + (4×8-2) = 16 + 6 + 0.25 + 0.0625 = 22.312510

iii) (DADA.B)16 = (13×163) + (10×162) + (13×161) + (10×160) + (11×16-1) = 53248 + 2560 + 208 + 10 + 0.6875 = 56026.687510

b

Subtract the following numbers using 1’s and 2’s complement: i) 1010100 – 1000011 ii) 1110.011 – 1001.001

5 marks

Answer

i) 1010100 - 1000011: 1's complement of 1000011 is 0111100. Adding: 1010100 + 0111100 = 10010000. Adding carry: 0010000 + 1 = 0010001. 2's complement of 1000011 is 0111101. Adding: 1010100 + 0111101 = 10010001. Discarding carry gives 0010001.

ii) 1110.011 - 1001.001: 1's complement of 1001.001 is 0110.110. Adding: 1110.011 + 0110.110 = 10101.001. Adding carry: 0101.001 + 1 = 0101.010. 2's complement of 1001.001 is 0110.111. Adding: 1110.011 + 0110.111 = 10101.010. Discarding carry gives 0101.010.
