Main
Discuss in detail the factors to be considered for CMOS/TTL Interfacing.
Answer
Interfacing CMOS and TTL logic families requires careful consideration of voltage levels, current requirements, and noise margins to ensure reliable operation. The primary factors are:
- Voltage Level Compatibility: TTL outputs (VOH min = 2.4V) often fail to meet the high-level input threshold for CMOS (VIH min = 0.7VDD, typically 3.5V for 5V logic). A pull-up resistor is often required to ensure the TTL output reaches the CMOS high-level threshold.
- Current Sourcing and Sinking: CMOS inputs have extremely high impedance and require negligible current, but TTL outputs have limited sourcing capability. The interface must ensure that the TTL output can drive the CMOS input without violating its VOH specifications.
- Noise Margins: Interfacing must maintain adequate noise immunity. Since CMOS and TTL have different logic thresholds, the interface circuit must shift levels to ensure the output of one stage is clearly interpreted as a valid logic state by the next.
- Speed and Propagation Delay: CMOS devices exhibit capacitive loading. When a TTL gate drives a CMOS input, the charging and discharging of the input capacitance through the pull-up resistor increases propagation delay, limiting the maximum operating frequency.
- Power Supply Considerations: If the systems operate at different supply voltages (e.g., 5V TTL and 3.3V CMOS), level shifters or voltage translators are mandatory to prevent damage to the CMOS device and ensure logical compatibility.
Compare CMOS and TTL families with respect to all characteristics.
Answer
| Characteristic | TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) | CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) |
|---|---|---|
| Power Dissipation | High (constant current) | Very low (mostly at switching) |
| Propagation Delay | Low (fast) | Moderate to high |
| Noise Margin | Moderate | High (excellent) |
| Fan-out | Typically 10 | Very high (due to high input impedance) |
| Input Impedance | Low | Extremely high |
| Supply Voltage | Fixed (typically 5V) | Wide range (e.g., 3V to 18V) |
