PART - A
Explain the use of Direction flag and Trap flag in 8086 microprocessor.
Answer
The Direction flag (DF) is used to control the direction of string manipulation instructions; if DF=0, the string is processed from lower to higher memory addresses (auto-increment), and if DF=1, it is processed from higher to lower (auto-decrement). The Trap flag (TF) is used for single-stepping; when set to 1, the processor executes one instruction and then enters a single-step interrupt mode, which is essential for debugging.
What are addressing modes? Explain immediate addressing mode of 8086 microprocessor with two examples.
Answer
Addressing modes are the various ways in which an operand can be specified in an instruction. In Immediate addressing mode, the operand is specified directly within the instruction itself as a constant value. Examples: 1) MOV AL, 05H (moves the immediate value 05 hex into the AL register), 2) MOV CX, 1234H (moves the immediate value 1234 hex into the CX register).
