a

the magnitude of error in each resistor

5 marks

Answer

The magnitude of the limiting error for each resistor is calculated by multiplying the nominal value by the percentage tolerance.

For R1 = 36Ω ± 5%:

δR1 = 36 × 0.05 = 1.8Ω

For R2 = 75Ω ± 5%:

δR2 = 75 × 0.05 = 3.75Ω
b

the limiting error in ohms and in percent when the resistors are connected in series

5 marks

Answer

When resistors are connected in series, the total resistance is Rs = R1 + R2 = 36 + 75 = 111Ω. The limiting error in the sum is the sum of the individual absolute errors.

δRs = δR1 + δR2 = 1.8 + 3.75 = 5.55Ω

The limiting error in percent is:

% Error = (δRs / Rs) × 100 = (5.55 / 111) × 100 = 5%
