Draw and explain the operation of op-amp as an integrator.

7 marks

Answer

An op-amp integrator is a circuit that performs the mathematical operation of integration on an input signal. It consists of an op-amp with an input resistor R connected to the inverting terminal and a feedback capacitor C connected between the output and the inverting terminal, while the non-inverting terminal is grounded.

The output voltage Vo is given by the expression:

Vo = -1 / (RC) ∫ Vin dt

Operation: When an input voltage Vin is applied, current I = Vin / R flows through the input resistor. Since the op-amp input impedance is very high, this current flows entirely into the feedback capacitor. The charge Q on the capacitor changes at a rate proportional to the input current, causing the output voltage to change at a rate proportional to the input voltage. Thus, the output is the integral of the input signal, inverted in polarity.

b

Explain the operation of inverting and non-inverting comparator.

8 marks

Answer

A comparator compares an input voltage with a reference voltage and produces a high or low output indicating which is greater. It operates in open-loop mode, utilizing the high open-loop gain of the op-amp to drive the output to saturation levels (+Vsat or -Vsat).

Inverting Comparator: The input signal Vin is applied to the inverting terminal (-), and the reference voltage Vref is applied to the non-inverting terminal (+). If Vin < Vref, the output is +Vsat. If Vin > Vref, the output is -Vsat.

Non-Inverting Comparator: The input signal Vin is applied to the non-inverting terminal (+), and the reference voltage Vref is applied to the inverting terminal (-). If Vin > Vref, the output is +Vsat. If Vin < Vref, the output is -Vsat.
