Answer PaperPaper Code: 113BQMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Write the advantages of floating-point representation.

2 marks

Answer

The primary advantages of floating-point representation are its ability to represent a significantly wider range of values, from extremely small to extremely large numbers, using a fixed number of bits, and its capacity to maintain a consistent level of relative precision across that entire range through the normalization of the significand.

1b

Add (+90) and (-80) using 2′s complement.

3 marks

Answer

To add (+90) and (-80) using 2's complement, we first represent the numbers in 8-bit binary format.

1. Represent +90 in binary: 01011010

2. Represent +80 in binary: 01010000

3. Find the 2's complement of +80 to represent -80:

  1. Invert the bits: 10101111
  2. Add 1: 10101111 + 1 = 10110000

4. Add the binary representations of +90 and -80:

01011010 (+90)
+ 10110000 (-80)
-----------
1 00001010

The carry bit (1) is ignored in 8-bit 2's complement arithmetic, leaving 00001010, which equals +10 in decimal.
