Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

1a

Explain about Supercomputers and Grid computers.

2 marks

Answer

Supercomputers are high-performance computing systems designed for complex, computationally intensive tasks such as weather forecasting, molecular modeling, and nuclear simulations. They utilize massive parallel processing architectures to achieve extremely high speeds measured in FLOPS.

Grid computers involve a distributed architecture where multiple geographically dispersed, heterogeneous computers are interconnected via a network to work together as a single virtual supercomputer. This approach enables resource sharing, such as processing power and storage, to solve large-scale problems that exceed the capacity of a single machine.

1b

Convert the number from (102)6 to ( --)8.

3 marks

Answer

To convert the number (102)6 to base 8, first convert it to decimal (base 10) and then to octal (base 8).

Step 1: Convert (102)6 to decimal:

1 × 62 + 0 × 61 + 2 × 60 = 36 + 0 + 2 = 3810

Step 2: Convert 3810 to octal by repeated division by 8:

  1. 38 ÷ 8 = 4 with a remainder of 6
  2. 4 ÷ 8 = 0 with a remainder of 4

Reading the remainders from bottom to top, we get (46)8.
