Explain the steps needed to connect the calling station with the mobile user in GSM.
Answer
When a calling station initiates a call to a mobile user in a GSM network, the following sequence of steps occurs:
- The calling party dials the mobile station's number, which is routed to the Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSC).
- The GMSC queries the Home Location Register (HLR) to identify the current location of the mobile user.
- The HLR requests the serving Visitor Location Register (VLR) to provide a Mobile Station Roaming Number (MSRN).
- The VLR assigns an MSRN and sends it back to the HLR, which forwards it to the GMSC.
- The GMSC uses the MSRN to route the call to the specific Mobile Switching Center (MSC) currently serving the mobile station.
- The serving MSC pages the mobile station within its location area.
- The mobile station responds to the page, and the MSC performs authentication and security checks.
- Once verified, the MSC establishes the connection, and the mobile station rings to alert the user.
Explain the applications of Mobile computing.
Answer
Mobile computing enables ubiquitous access to information and services regardless of the user's physical location. Key applications include:
- Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce): Facilitates secure financial transactions, mobile banking, and online shopping on the go.
- Location-Based Services (LBS): Provides context-aware information such as navigation, traffic updates, and proximity-based advertising using GPS data.
- Emergency Services: Allows for rapid communication and tracking during disasters, including police, fire, and medical response coordination.
- Mobile Office and Enterprise Applications: Enables remote access to corporate intranets, email, and cloud-based collaboration tools for field employees.
- Entertainment and Social Networking: Supports real-time streaming of multimedia content, online gaming, and instant social interaction.
- Telemedicine: Allows healthcare providers to monitor patient vitals remotely and consult with specialists in real-time.
- Education: Supports mobile learning (m-learning) platforms that provide access to educational resources and virtual classrooms.
