Explain the effect of grain size on mechanical properties of metals and alloys.

9 marks

Answer

Grain size significantly influences the mechanical properties of metals and alloys, primarily governed by the Hall-Petch relationship. Grain boundaries act as barriers to dislocation motion; therefore, a finer grain size increases the number of boundaries, hindering dislocation movement and resulting in higher strength and hardness.

The relationship between yield strength (σy) and average grain diameter (d) is given by:

σy = σ0 + kyd^(-1/2)

where σ0 is the starting stress for dislocation movement and ky is a material-specific constant. Beyond strength, finer grains also improve ductility and toughness, as smaller grains allow for more uniform plastic deformation and reduce the likelihood of crack propagation along grain boundaries. Conversely, coarse-grained materials exhibit lower yield strength but may offer better creep resistance at high temperatures, as fewer grain boundaries reduce the rate of grain boundary sliding and diffusion.

b

What is alloying? Explain its importance.

6 marks

Answer

Alloying is the process of combining a base metal with one or more other elements (metallic or non-metallic) to produce a material with enhanced properties. This is typically achieved by melting the components together to form a solid solution or intermetallic compound.

The importance of alloying includes:

  • Increased Strength: Alloying elements introduce lattice distortions that impede dislocation movement, significantly increasing yield and tensile strength.
  • Improved Corrosion Resistance: Elements like chromium are added to iron to form a protective oxide layer, preventing oxidation and rust.
  • Enhanced Hardness and Wear Resistance: Alloying allows for the formation of hard carbides or precipitates that resist surface degradation.
  • Modification of Physical Properties: Alloying can alter electrical conductivity, thermal expansion, and magnetic properties to suit specific engineering applications.
  • Improved Fabricability: Certain elements are added to improve castability, weldability, or machinability of the base metal.
