Part A

1.a

Convert 1 kg/s-m dynamic viscosity in Poise.

2 marks

Answer

The dynamic viscosity is given as 1 kg/(m·s). Since 1 kg/(m·s) is equivalent to 1 Pa·s, and 1 Pa·s equals 10 Poise (P), the conversion is 1 kg/(m·s) = 10 Poise.

1.b

Explain about kinematic viscosity and give dimensions.

3 marks

Answer

Kinematic viscosity is defined as the ratio of dynamic viscosity (μ) of a fluid to its mass density (ρ). It represents the resistance of a fluid to flow under the influence of gravity and is a measure of the fluid's momentum diffusivity.

ν = μ / ρ

The dimensions of kinematic viscosity are derived from the dimensions of dynamic viscosity [M L⁻¹ T⁻¹] and density [M L⁻³]:

[ν] = [M L⁻¹ T⁻¹] / [M L⁻³] = [L² T⁻¹]

In the SI system, its unit is square meters per second (m²/s), while in the CGS system, it is expressed in Stokes (St), where 1 St = 1 cm²/s = 10⁻⁴ m²/s.
