PART - A

1a

What are the events recorded in port timing diagram of a diesel engine?

2 marks

Answer

The port timing diagram of a two-stroke diesel engine records the following key events: Exhaust port opening (EPO), Transfer port opening (TPO), Transfer port closing (TPC), and Exhaust port closing (EPC). These events are measured in degrees of crank angle relative to the Top Dead Center (TDC) and Bottom Dead Center (BDC) positions.

1b

What do you mean by combustion stoichiometry?

3 marks

Answer

Combustion stoichiometry refers to the theoretical calculation of the minimum amount of oxygen or air required for the complete combustion of a fuel. It is based on the principle of conservation of mass, where the number of atoms of each element in the reactants must equal the number of atoms of the same element in the products.

In this process, the fuel is assumed to react completely with oxygen such that no fuel remains unburnt and no oxygen is left over, resulting in products consisting only of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen (if air is used). The stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is the specific ratio where the chemical reaction is perfectly balanced, leaving zero excess oxygen in the exhaust gases.
