JNTU B.Tech III INTRODUCTION TO MECHATRONICS Previous Question Paper (February - 2023 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Label the significance of signal conditioning.
Answer
Signal conditioning is essential to transform raw sensor outputs into a format suitable for processing by a controller or data acquisition system. Its primary significance lies in amplification of weak signals, filtering out unwanted noise, and analog-to-digital conversion to ensure signal integrity and compatibility with digital processing units.
Summarize high pass filtering.
Answer
A high pass filter is a circuit or algorithm designed to allow signals with frequencies higher than a specific cutoff frequency to pass through while attenuating or blocking lower-frequency signals. In mechatronics, it is commonly used to remove DC offsets, eliminate low-frequency noise (such as power line hum or drift), or isolate high-frequency transient signals from sensors.
The fundamental behavior is defined by the cutoff frequency (fc), where the output amplitude drops to 70.7% (-3 dB) of the input amplitude. Below this frequency, the gain decreases as the frequency decreases, typically at a rate of 20 dB per decade for a first-order filter. A simple passive high pass filter is constructed using a series capacitor followed by a shunt resistor to ground.
