Part A

1.a

State different types of ideal cycle of refrigeration.

2 marks

Answer

The ideal cycles of refrigeration are primarily classified based on the working principle and the thermodynamic processes involved:

  • Vapour Compression Refrigeration Cycle: An ideal cycle consisting of isentropic compression, constant pressure heat rejection, isenthalpic expansion, and constant pressure heat absorption.
  • Vapour Absorption Refrigeration Cycle: An ideal cycle that utilizes thermal energy instead of mechanical work to achieve the refrigeration effect, involving the absorption and generation of refrigerant in a secondary fluid.
  • Air Refrigeration Cycle (Bell-Coleman Cycle): A gas cycle based on the reversed Brayton cycle, where air is used as the refrigerant, undergoing isentropic compression, constant pressure cooling, isentropic expansion, and constant pressure heating.
1.b

Explain in brief the necessity of Refrigeration.

3 marks

Answer

Refrigeration is essential for maintaining temperatures below the ambient environment to preserve the quality and safety of perishable goods. Its primary necessities include:

  • Food Preservation: It inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, and enzymes in food products, significantly extending their shelf life and preventing spoilage.
  • Medical and Chemical Applications: It is critical for the storage of vaccines, blood, tissues, and sensitive chemical compounds that would otherwise degrade at room temperature.
  • Industrial and Comfort Cooling: It enables precise climate control in industrial processes and provides thermal comfort in air conditioning systems, which is vital for human productivity and health in hot climates.

An air refrigerator working on Bell coleman cycle takes in air at 1 bar and at a temperature of 100C. The air is compressed to 5 bar abs. The same is cooled to 250C in the cooler before expanding in the expansion cylinder to cold chamber pressure of 1 bar. The compression and expansion laws followed are PV1.35 = C and PV1.3 = C respectively. Determine C.O.P of the plant and net refrigeration effect per kg of air. Take Cp = 1.009 kJ/kg K and R = 0.287 kJ/kg K for air.
