Answer PaperPaper Code: 133BFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Discuss the factor of safety.

2 marks

Answer

The Factor of Safety is the ratio of the ultimate stress of a material to the allowable or working stress. It is used to ensure that a structure or machine component can safely withstand the applied loads by providing a margin of safety against failure.

Factor of Safety = Ultimate Stress / Working Stress
b

Explain the stress strain diagram for brittle materials.

3 marks

Answer

Brittle materials, such as cast iron or concrete, exhibit little to no plastic deformation before failure. In the stress-strain diagram, the curve is nearly linear up to the point of fracture. There is no distinct yield point, and the material fails suddenly by brittle fracture without significant elongation.

c

State the assumptions made in the simple theory of bending.
